IU Health and the Indiana University School of Medicine seek a mid-career or established academic medical oncologist to join the Genitourinary (GU) Oncology Program at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center in Indianapolis.
This role is designed for a physician-scientist with expertise in GU malignancies and a strong commitment to translational, laboratory-based, and preclinical research. The candidate will join an established GU oncology program with a robust clinical trials portfolio and contribute to discoveries that drive novel therapies, biomarker development, correlative science, and investigator-initiated clinical trials.
The ideal candidate will have an independent or emerging laboratory program focused on GU cancer biology, drug development, biomarkers, therapeutic resistance, tumor microenvironment, immuno-oncology, radiopharmaceuticals, antibody-drug conjugates, targeted therapies, or other translational areas relevant to GU cancers.
Disease-focused GU oncology clinical practice with at least 50% protected effort dedicated to translational research, laboratory investigation, and collaboration with clinical trial teams. Support includes protected research time, competitive startup funding, lab space, NCI-designated cancer center resources, and established clinical trial infrastructure.
Position Highlights
Full-time academic opportunity focused on GU oncology and translational research

Collaboration across medical oncology, urology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, pathology, radiology, precision genomics, and basic science departments
Access to clinical trial infrastructure, biospecimens, biostatistics, translational science collaborators, and disease-site research teams
Opportunity to develop laboratory-driven concepts supporting investigator-initiated, cooperative group, and industry-sponsored trials
Participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards, research meetings, education, and mentorship of fellows, residents, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty
Key Responsibilities
Lead a laboratory and/or preclinical research program focused on GU malignancies, including disease progression, therapeutic resistance, biomarker discovery, tumor biology, and drug development. Pursue peer-reviewed funding (potential program project grants including SPOREs). Collaborate with GU clinical investigators to translate scientific discoveries into clinical trial concepts and strengthen correlative science efforts. Expert care for adult GU oncology patients with a clinical footprint aligned to research priorities.

Healthcare providers at IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center not only offer the highest level of patient care but many are engaged in research. As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in the state of Indiana, IU Health Simon Cancer Center’s researchers are recognized for meeting rigorous criteria for world-class, state-of-the-art programs in multidisciplinary cancer research. NCI-designated cancer centers put significant resources into developing research programs, faculty and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
In 2022, the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center was admitted as a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 32 leading cancer centers devoted to patient care, research and education.
The mission is to advance the understanding, prevention and treatment of cancer throughout Indiana and the world with patient-centered care, acceleration of promising science and collaborative educational programs. Research is vigorous, innovative and devoted to taking improved cancer care into the future. In all, more than 200 physicians, nurses, social workers, techologists and researchers are working to develop cures for cancer.
That teamwork leads to clinical breakthroughs, such as turning the cure rate of testicular cancer from 10 percent to nearly 95 percent today, among many others. The benefits to patients are clear: a wide range of innovative treatment options, expert teams of diverse professionals focused on their specific cancer type, and attention to all cancer care needs in one setting.
