The Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina, is seeking applicants for the position of Medical Director for Kidney and Pancreas Transplant. The division is a national leader in kidney care, research, and education, with a faculty and staff of over 110 individuals. Duke is a world-renowned transplant center, ranking seventh in the United States by overall transplant volume. The program has benefited from stable leadership over the past 15 years and strong, collegial partnership between transplant nephrology and abdominal transplant surgery. It is supported by a highly experienced, co-located team of advanced practice providers (APPs), transplant coordinators, and program support staff. Duke also leads the state in kidney transplantation as North Carolina?s largest program by volume and patient registrations and is the OPTN Region 11 leader in living donor kidney transplant volume, with a national reputation for excellence in transplant research.
The Medical Director for Adult Kidney and Pancreas Transplant will lead a clinical team that includes eight faculty, two APPs, and one fellow. The Transplant Nephrology program provides inpatient services at Duke University Hospital and outpatient services at two clinic locations. This position is essential to delivering high-quality, safe, and patient-centered care.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to and collaborate within a vibrant research environment spanning basic, translational, clinical and health services research. Division faculty conduct highly innovative research across kidney transplantation, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndromes, genetic kidney diseases, and immune tolerance. Their work is supported by federally funded labs, multi-PI translational research programs, investigator-initiated clinical trials, and a robust clinical trial infrastructure.
The division also offers a one-year AST-accredited kidney transplant fellowship for board-eligible nephrologists pursuing a career in transplant nephrology.
Candidates should demonstrate the ability to provide strategic and operational leadership that advances clinical care, education, and research in Transplant Nephrology, while aligning with and supporting the Division of Nephrology?s broader tripartite mission.
Applicants must have an MD degree or equivalent from an accredited College of Medicine, be board-certified in Nephrology, and be eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher (tenure track) at the Duke University School of Medicine. Additional information about the Department of Medicine and Division of Nephrology is posted at Duke Department of Medicine.
Qualified individuals should submit a letter of interest (two-page maximum) describing their clinical, research, and administrative experience and expertise, along with a current curriculum vitae, to NephrologyTransplantMedicalDirectorSearch@duke.edu by July 31, 2026.
