The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is assigned to the Hemodialysis (HD) Unit, which is organizationally responsible to Medical Service. The MIT HD serves as a member of the dialysis team. This represents the full performance level. The HD MIT is responsible for the operation of all HD equipment, water treatment system and all related components to ensure safe treatment daily. The HD MIT may also provide instructions on machine operation and monitoring for self-care or home patients. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Knowledge of the hemodialysis process and equipment needed for home/self-care including knowledge of common machine problems and repairs to such equipment. Ability to provide instruction to dialysis patients in home/self-care and in the maintenance of the equipment. Ability to provide instruction for physicians, nurses, and other personnel in dialysis procedures, machine operation, related equipment and maintenance. Functions Operates diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments and equipment as part of the treatment for both acutely ill and chronic renal failure patients. Takes a lead in the maintenance, troubleshooting and disinfection of equipment, water quality monitoring, restocking of supplies and/or preparation of dialysate concentrates for dialysis procedures. This may include special disinfection procedures related to water treatment systems as well as monthly colony counts on the RO systems and dialysate. Functions as a preceptor for new technical or nursing staff in learning the operation of all dialysis machine and equipment. Provides feedback to new personnel and assures completion of the orientation documentation for all equipment related functions. Provides progress update to the management team on new employee strengths and identifies areas for improvement. Services as technical support in the operation, calibration and trouble shooting of specialized medical equipment and instruments. Assists lead technician/biomedical support staff in maintaining equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and regulatory standards. Assures that all portable RO are rinsed daily if not used and disinfected according to unit policy. Places portable RO systems in storage heat if not being used for extended periods and assures that proper procedures are followed prior to use according to manufacturer's policy. Provides instructions to home or self-care patients on dialysis machines and related dialysis equipment in the function, operation and trouble shooting of common problems. Provides instructions to physicians, nurses and other personnel on hemodialysis procedures, equipment operation and maintenance. Actively participates in maintaining all safety requirements in the unit related to patients as well as staff. Tracks electrical safety checks on all medical equipment notifies appropriate service for updates or missing labels, maintains eye wash stations and acts if malfunction occurs. Takes an active role in assuring that PPE is available and utilized by technical staff. Maintains inventory of all dialysis related supplies on a weekly basisassuring rotation of stock and adequate levels are maintained. Communicates stock issues with the appropriate staff on a regular basis and recommends changes in stock numbers as inventories fluctuate. Oversees general technical duties in the machine room, drum rooms, RO room, and supply rooms assuring that all technically related duties are performed during require daily intervals and all required documentation related to these duties has been done at the end of his/her shift.
