| This position is located in the Emergency Department of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The Health Technician will be assigned to Nursing Service and work under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department and will function under the direct leadership of a registered professional nurse. Duties may include: Adjusts and adapts specialized equipment for difficult procedures, i.e. bladder scan, EKG readings Performs timely electrocardiograms and routine maintenance and storage of ECG and/or other monitoring equipment Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate staff Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment and sets indicators for measurements or readings Adjusts equipment placement for patient's comfort, including positioning patients Operates and maintains equipment safely in a manner ensuring accurate results Operates vital signs equipment and connects patients to cardiac monitor Performs skin puncture for blood glucose checks and monitors glucometer controls Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of appropriate staff Orders and maintains supplies pertaining to instruments or equipment used Notes any malfunctioning equipment, labels with malfunction notice, and removes equipment from use, as well as completes work order for appropriate repair Responds to emergency situations such as cardiopulmonary arrest, hemorrhaging, shock, and psychiatric emergencies Maintains 1:1 observation of high-risk mental health as well as medical patients Correctly and safely applies behavioral restraints Taking, recording and reporting to charge nurse or nurse manager deviations in vital signs Obtaining specimens, including, but not limited to, blood (phlebotomy), urine, sputum, feces, nasal/pharyngeal swabs, and tissue cultures Transports specimens to laboratory or specified location Prepares patient for and assists medical/nursing professionals with procedures including, but not limited to, intubation, central line placement, lumbar puncture, chest tube insertion, and thoracentesis Arranges and passes medical instruments and materials to medical/nursing professional for a variety of tests and procedures Charts accurate patient information into patient's electronic medical record Applies hot/cold packs and orthopedic splints Applies and changes sterile dressings Completes IV starts and maintenance of IV- line patency Trained in using Ultrasound for difficult to place IV starts Performs a variety of specialized treatments such as, nasal pharyngeal / tracheostomy suctioning, inserting urethral catheters and irrigating suprapubic catheters; instituting and maintaining bladder irrigation with three-way urethral catheters Administers enemas Empties and records drainage from Foleys, surgical drains, such as Hemovac and Jackson-Pratt drains, Pleurovacs, and suction cannisters Performs or assists Triage staff with diagnostic procedures including EKGs, venipunctures, and alcohol breathalyzer used to diagnose medical conditions Performs a variety of specialized treatments including nasal, nasal pharyngeal and/or tracheostomy suctioning, inserting urethral catheters and irrigating suprapubic catheters; instituting and maintaining bladder irrigation with three-way urethral catheters Performs direct patient support work including bathing, oral care, hair care, related hygiene and toileting care; postmortem care; turning, positioning, lifting, transferring patients Anticipates and answers patient's calls for assistance Prepares patient for admission, including inventorying personal belongings, securing valuables, and dressing patients appropriately as to high-risk status and disposition location Escorts patients safely to appropriate services and/or departments Collects and organizes information and/or data from patients Maintains administrative records, logs, monitors as per Unit policy Requisitions tests, procedures and supplies Assists patients in contacting family members, members of their treatment team or social services, and ancillary services as needed Answers telephone and provides accurate information according to HIPAA and Unit protocols Receives and responds to patients' inquiries concerning a variety of medical, personnel, and administrative matters Assists patients, visitors, and others requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance Assists patients in contacting volunteer, social services, and ancillary services as needed. Transports patients to and from required destinations Secures patient confidence and cooperation during procedures Educates patients on pre-and post-procedure activities Teaches patients and family members the necessity of continuing proper health care Provides follow-up care instructions and demonstrations for patients Counsels patients on subjects such as care of minor injuries and illnesses, diseases Mentors/precepts new health technicians within the ED Promotion Potential: Not Applicable Work Schedule: Various Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
