Provides Cardiopulmonary Bypass Perfusion services supporting the heart program.
Operates the heart-lung bypass machine or associated extra-corporeal equipment during procedures which require artificial support or temporary replacement of patientï¿½s circulatory or respiratory functions. Manages the physiological and metabolic needs of the cardiac surgical patient in collaboration with the surgeon and anesthesiologist during bypass surgery, including interventions during emergency situations. Assesses, implements, and evaluates care for Cardiopulmonary Bypass including review of patient history and medical data, and selection of appropriate equipment for construction of circuit. Administers appropriate medications to support cardiac care of the patient for bypass surgery. Performs appropriate perioperative monitoring in conjunction with perfusion services. Perioperative management of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, Impella device or other similar devices. Performs Perioperative autotransfusion (cell saver) for cardiac surgeries. Monitors anticoagulation, electrolyte, acid-base balance and blood-gas composition. Performs point-of-care testing including but not limited to: ACT machine, HMS System Collaborates with team members to ensure optimal patient care. Documents patient care activities for Cardiopulmonary Bypass and associated modalities. Performs equipment safety checks to ensure safety of bypass machine. Complies with standard procedures to maintain optimal operating condition of equipment including preparation, maintenance and cleaning. Participates in blood conservation processes Participates in Quality review of perfusion related services including collection and interpretation of STS data. Provides on-call status to ensure 24/7 coverage for perfusion and autotransfusion services, including standby requests.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Required: Certification from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion; BLS, ACLS
EDUCATION: Required: Bachelorï¿½s degree in Science or related field. Graduate of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program. Preferred: Masterï¿½s degree including clinical training
WORK EXPERIENCE: Required: Minimum of two years as a perfusionist Preferred: Minimum of two years as a perfusionist and two years of leadership experience #LI-AR1
